North Sand Bluff Lighthouse

Port Edward, KwaZulu Natal,
South Africa

North Sand Bluff Lighthouse is a fully automatic lighthouse situated in the village of Port Edward on the shores of the Natal South Coast, just north of the Umtamvuna River.

The lighthouse was commissioned in 1968. The original aluminium lattice tower was replaced in 1999 with a concrete tower. The town of Port Edward is named in honour of the then Prince of Wales (1952).

The Ivy, a British wooden barque was wrecked close to Port Edward on 27 March 1878 while on a voyage from London to Durban and one man was lost. Ivy Beach was named after this wreck.
