Art 4 Living is a Creative Art School that teaches drawing, painting and woodcut printmaking from an attic studio in Umtentweni. I am in the process of setting up “Art in acts” – making banners, sculpting and dancing with flags, amongst Other Art forms.

My work is influenced by the Impressionists; van Gogh for his acid palette, Toulouse-Lautrec for his energetic brushstrokes and Monet for his water lilies, both paint application and his use of light. I like to convey dramatic lighting and work in colour in different relationships to one another, often working in complementary colours. I like to work on a black background, both matt and gloss, exposing some of the black through the brushstrokes. I’ve experimented with electric colours too. I like the Renaissance painters for their dark, rich colours.

At school I studied under the late Paul Lavender, a well known Water Colour artist. Here I learnt much about Still Life and my first solo-exhibition “Still Life with Green Jug” using unusual view points, dramatic colour and lighting was born.

I studied one year of Foundation Course in Fine Art at Technikon Natal, learning much from Dan Cooke, who taught perceptual studies, paint technique and application. I received a diploma in Interior Design three years later at Technikon Natal.

I charge R100-00 per lesson, excluding materials. I teach adults and children. Groups are also very welcome.
