The school was established in 2002 as a finishing school and was called Port Shepstone Finishing School. The name was changed to Port Shepstone International High School in in 2005 when it became a full time high school, accomodating grades 10 to 12, grade 8 and 9 were added to the streams in 2007.

The school is registered with the Department of Education with registration number 442594 it is also registered as a non-profit organisation with registration number 065-756-NPO.
